Safer Roads

What Needs to Happen

Despite extensive planning and consultation by the Department of Transport and Main Roads completed in late 2024, no works have been undertaken, and locals are now seeing an increase in reported instances of accidents, which highlights the urgency of these works to be delivered.

There is a clear need to fund and deliver safety and congestion upgrades on Mount Cotton Road, particularly at the Double Jump Road, Valley Way and Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road intersections, and Beenleigh Redland Bay Road itself.

In 2025, a local Mt Cotton resident launched a Parliamentary petition, calling for further progress.

Click here to view the Parliamentary petition, which was tabled in Parliament on 10 June 2025.

The Petitioners requested the House to do all in its power to:

1. Ensure the upgrades of the Double Jump Road and Mount Cotton Road intersection and the Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road intersection (including traffic signals), with construction starting no later than December 2025

2. Confirm the scope and timeline for the promised upgrade of the Valley Way and Mount Cotton Road intersection.

3. Provide a clear and publicly available construction timeline for all upgrades.

What Work Has Been Done Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) was funded to release a planning layout for the Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road (BRBR) upgrade. Improvements being considered will support the growing needs of school and residential communities in the local area.

The planning investigated options for additional lanes (2 to 4 lanes), intersection upgrades, and active transport improvements. These upgrades will provide critical connections to the future stages of the Coomera Connector and support future growth of the South East Queensland region.

TMR liaised directly with impacted residents and businesses during the consultation phase and invited the community to have their say on the proposed planning layout.

TMR sought feedback on your views on the proposed planning for the BRBR upgrade. Feedback was to help the project team understand what is important to you to help shape this project and future planning projects.

Submissions closed on 30 September 2024, immediately before the last State election.

What Work Has Been Done on the Double Jump Road Intersection?

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) undertook planning for Mount Cotton Road, Redland Bay Road and Redland Sub-Arterial Road.

A first round of community consultation was undertaken between 13 February and 12 March 2023 to identify community concerns and priorities.

Community consultation identified the Double Jump Road and Mount Cotton Road intersection, and the Taylor Road and Redland Bay Road intersection, as the highest community concerns and priorities.

A first round of consultation in February and March 2023, identified safety and congestion at the Double Jump Road and Mount Cotton Road intersection as a key community priority.

A second round of community consultation in May and June 2024, sought community feedback on options to address safety concerns at these priority locations.

More than 1700 people visited the project consultation page, wrote to the project team, or provided feedback face-to-face at information sessions. Over 400 formal submissions or contributions were received with 70% of participants supporting signalisation of the Double Jump Road and Mount Cotton Road intersection

Based on community feedback and further planning work, TMR developed preferred concept design options for these intersections as a priority for staged upgrades along the corridor.

Submissions closed 24 June 2024, before the last State election.
