I could not be prouder to call Logan home. And this last week has really filled me with pride.
Queenslanders are no strangers to extreme weather, and once again, our community has demonstrated its remarkable resilience and spirit in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Alfred and the drenching rain it dropped across every suburb.
Over a week since the storm, efforts to rebuild and recover continue, proving that the strength of Logan lies not just in its infrastructure but in its people.
As the recovery goes on, I know Logan locals will stand together, supporting one another every step of the way. Standing shoulder to shoulder.
It’s a lot more than could be said for LNP leader, Peter Dutton who as Logan was battening down the hatches as TC Alfred meandered its way toward us, cut and run to a fundraiser with some of the nations richest people.
And what was really sad about this situation is that he left Queensland in the lurch, and jetted off to Sydney and the wealthiest suburb in the nation, to fill LNP moneybags instead of Logan sandbags.
And to rub salt into our cyclone and flood wounds, media is reporting that Peter Dutton’s host at the multi million dollar mansion, whilst Logan residents took shelter, has been forced to settle $19.25 million lawsuit for wage theft perpetrated against his own workforce
Back home though, and in awesome contrast, local SES volunteers were in full flight, and our emergency services personnel have done an outstanding job responding to this crisis.
Their tireless efforts, from clearing fallen eucalypts, to filling thousands upon thousands of sandbags, have been nothing short of heroic.
Likewise, Energex crews and their northern colleagues who came to help, have worked around the clock to restore power, ensuring homes and businesses can get back on their feet as quickly as possible.
The severe and in many cases prolonged impact of power outages on families and businesses has been deeply felt. Despite the challenges, there are two words that could define Logan’s collective response to this event - determined and compassionate.
